Subject: Kathryn Darin
Gifted and Talented Coordinator
Fountain Lake School System
Fountain Lake, AR
The purpose of this letter is to comment on Kathryn Darin's excellent ability to work with children in the Fountain Lake school system.
I am a Committee Chairman for the Missouri Arkansas District of Kiwanis International. The goal of Kiwanis is to improve the life of children throughout the world. One of the ways we do this is to establish student service organizations in the schools. While the students actually run the club meetings and events, the success of a club depends on the expertise of the teachers and school administrators assisting the club.
Ms. Darin took over a middle school club (Builder's Club) that was on the verge of folding because of low student participation. In one semester she turned it into the most popular organization in the school. She started in September with 8 members. As soon as it was known that she was taking over the club, it immediately grew to 53 students. She had to limit membership and start a waiting list because of space constraints. In the first four months, the club had a money making project that raised over $500 and conducted three service projects.
Ms. Darin has been with Fountain Lake only one and one half years. In that time she has started a robotics club that finished 2nd in state competition, an Entrepreneur Showcase that finished third, and a quiz bowl team that finished second. She had the entire middle school participating in World Math Day.
Ms. Darin has a wonderful ability to bring out the best in children. Under her guidance, they seem to want to achieve.
